Growing students, one story at a time
Our Founder
Personal Profile
Introduction: More Than a Teacher
For nearly 30 years, Dr. Wesley R. Cooper, Jr. has led a life of inquiry, not just as an educator, but as an international archaeologist, published author, and community leader. This Maryland native, who now resides in the rolling hills of Kentucky, has woven these diverse experiences into a singular and powerful mission: to help young people become "master students." As the founder of Oakleigh Learning Academy, his career is a testament to the idea that the greatest discoveries are often about how we learn, grow, and take charge of our own education.

1. The Explorer's Path: Forging a Career in Teaching and Archaeology
Dr. Cooper’s career developed along two parallel tracks: one in the classroom, shaping young minds, and the other in the field, uncovering the past. His personal commitment to academic excellence is clear from his own educational journey, which began with an Associate of Arts and culminated in a Doctor of Education, where he earned a perfect 4.00 GPA. Along the way, he graduated with high honors, including Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude, demonstrating the same discipline he now aims to instill in others.
While dedicating the school year to his students, he spent his summers leading excavations at sites ranging from Maya palace complexes in Belize to Roman-Cypriot tombs in Cyprus.

The same meticulous process required to map a Roman-Cypriot tomb or a Celtic hill fort—patiently clearing away the debris to reveal the structure beneath—became the model for his approach to student development. He realized that students, too, needed a methodical way to clear away distractions and build a solid foundation for learning.

2. Unearthing a Critical Problem in Modern Schools
After decades surveying the educational landscape, Dr. Cooper noticed that a key layer was missing from the strata of school improvement. He identified a fundamental challenge in the system—a problem he calls the "student-accountability deficit." He observed that while schools were intensely focused on measuring teacher performance, they were largely ignoring the student's own role in the learning process.
He pinpointed several core issues stemming from this deficit:
• Top-Down Focus: Accountability systems are almost entirely aimed at teachers, schools, and administrators. This creates an imbalance where the student's own contribution, effort, and growth are not systematically taught or measured.
• Passive Students: This system often treats students like spectators in their own education, waiting for information to be given to them rather than being active players on the field.
• Missing Skills: Most importantly, students are seldom taught the essential skills needed to become effective, self-disciplined learners. His work builds on research showing that a primary reason students "fall short of their intellectual potential" is their "failure to exercise self-discipline" (Duckworth & Seligman, 2005). In fact, the same research found that self-discipline was a stronger predictor of a student's final grades than their IQ, accounting for more than twice as much variance in academic performance.
Convinced that students needed to be empowered, not just instructed, Dr. Cooper set out to design a new framework to solve this problem from the ground up.

3. The Blueprint for Success: The OLA-SAGA Framework
Dr. Cooper's solution is the Oakleigh Learning Academy Student Accountability and Growth Assessment (OLA-SAGA). More than a blueprint, this innovative "bottom-up" framework provides the "trowel and brush" that students can use to carefully excavate their own potential. It is both a training program and an assessment tool designed to cultivate "masterful studentship."
The SAGA framework is built on Four Core Disciplines:
1. Self-Leadership This is the foundation for taking charge of your own learning. It’s about building personal accountability through Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, and Resolve (Grit). This means valuing yourself and the learning process, taking ownership of your actions, skillfully finding solutions to problems, and having the passionate commitment to see a mission through to the end.
2. Emotional Intelligence This is your ability to understand what you're feeling and why, so you can use those emotions to help you focus instead of letting them get in your way. Learning can be tough, and by managing your emotions, you can think more clearly, stay focused, and grow from challenges instead of being discouraged by them.
3. Motivation This is the internal "why" that drives you. The framework helps you answer the essential questions every learner must face: "Can I do this?" (Self-Efficacy), "Why am I doing this?" (Purpose), and "Do I have a choice?" (Autonomy). Answering these questions helps you build belief in yourself, connect schoolwork to a bigger goal, and take true ownership of your education.
4. Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) This is where you become the architect of your own learning. It is the self-directive process where you transform your mental abilities into real academic skills through a cycle where you actively Plan your approach, Perform the task with focus, Reflect on what worked, and use effective strategies to Retain knowledge for the long term.
Dr. Cooper's intellectual work on this framework is deeply connected to his own life as a creator, researcher, and lifelong learner.

4. A Life of Inquiry: Author, Researcher, and Family Man
Beyond his work as an educator and theorist, Dr. Cooper is a multifaceted individual whose passions enrich his professional mission. His life demonstrates a deep and abiding curiosity, whether he is exploring ancient history, crafting fictional worlds, or contributing to his local community.
• Published Author: He is the author of two fantasy novels that invite readers into new worlds:
◦ Oriana Oakleigh and the Primrose Path
◦ Oriana Oakleigh and the Dragon Danes
• Researcher: He has contributed to the field of archaeology with his published article, "Kourion Amathus Gate Cemetery Project."
• Community Member: He is an active participant in his local community as a musician and an actor in theater organizations.
• Family Man: He is married and is a father to five children.
Each of these roles—storyteller, scientist, artist, and father—contributes to his holistic understanding of human growth and his overarching goal of empowering the next generation.

5. Conclusion: Your Own Expedition into Learning
Dr. Wesley R. Cooper, Jr.'s story is a powerful reminder that a career path doesn't have to be linear. In his journey, the archaeologist's discipline, the teacher's dedication, and the theorist's insight all converged to address one of education's most critical needs. He looked at the system and, like an archaeologist surveying a new site, asked: What's missing here?
His answer—the OLA-SAGA framework—is more than an academic theory; it is a call to action for you. Dr. Cooper's life serves as an inspiring example of how a passion for research and a genuine desire to solve meaningful problems can lead to a fascinating and impactful life dedicated to helping you succeed. What undiscovered potential lies within you, waiting to be carefully unearthed?
